Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your first shop with Troli.

  • 01 What exactly is Troli?

Troli is a free family shopping list app built for Kenyan households. You build your list at home, see your estimated total before leaving, tick items off as you shop, and keep a full record of every trip. Think of it as the gap between the family WhatsApp group shopping thread and actually knowing what you spent — and why.

  • No credit card needed to get started. Sign up with your Google or Facebook account and start building lists straight away.

  • Click Get started free and sign in with Google or Facebook. No passwords, no long forms — just one tap. Your account is ready instantly.

  • Troli is built for families and households — any group of people who share a budget and shop together. One person creates the family account and invites others. Everyone shares the same lists, history, and spending overview. It also works just as well for a single person who wants to shop with more clarity.

  • Go to Family Members and click Invite. You'll get a unique link valid for 72 hours. Share it via WhatsApp, SMS, or email. When the person clicks the link and signs in, they're automatically added to your family — no approval steps needed.

  • A wishlist is your plan — a list you've built but haven't shopped yet. When you go to the store, open the list, tick off items as you pick them up, and confirm checkout. At that point it becomes a completed list saved permanently in your shopping history. Your wishlists are your upcoming trips; your completed lists are your full record.

  • Yes. When creating a new list, choose Enter manually to build a free-form list from scratch — type the item name, quantity, and price. No product catalog needed. This is useful for one-off purchases, market items, or anything that isn't in our database yet.

  • Prices are the ones you set when you add products to your personal catalog. Troli does not update prices automatically — the market shifts, and you know your usual prices better than any algorithm does. After a shopping trip, just update any products whose prices have changed, and your estimates will stay accurate.

  • Troli's total is an estimate based on the prices you've saved. Differences happen when prices have changed, a promotion is running, or you picked a different pack size than usual. The goal isn't perfection — it's replacing a total surprise with a close estimate. Update prices after each trip and the estimates get tighter over time.

  • Every product in our catalog is tagged to a level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs — from basic physiological essentials (food, water, hygiene) up through safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualisation (hobbies, personal growth). Your spending history maps across these levels, giving you an honest, at-a-glance picture of where your household money actually goes.

  • Yes. Any family member with access can open the same list and tick off items from their end. The list also records who created it and who completed the shop, so there's always a clear audit trail — useful when different members handle different aisles or different trips.

  • Your data is private to your family group. Only members you have invited can see your lists and spending history. We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers or third parties.

  • Yes. Troli works on any device with a web browser — Android, iPhone, tablet, or computer. Open it in your mobile browser and it adapts to your screen. No app download required, though you can add it to your home screen from your browser's menu for quick access.
